And the Winner is….
Before we announce the winner to the Disney on Ice Contest, we have to let everyone know that this was a hard decision for the State Fair staffers to make! Thank you to everyone who posted a memory from Disney on Ice in the comments. It is a wonderful feeling to know that one of our events holds a place in so many people’s hearts and minds when they think of the Oklahoma State Fair.
That being said, the envelope please….
The winner is Danielle who had this memory:
I have to say the best part about Disney on Ice is when everything goes dark and all you hear is the excitement of the kids and all you see are the kids and there light up toys. There is no better feeling than the feeling of being home! Growing up my grand parents adopted my brother, sister, and I. I remember the first time that they took us to see Disney on Ice. I was thinking to myself there are so many people here and what is the big deal? But once the arena went dark and they started the show I was mesmerized! The smiles on the skater’s faces, the excitement surrounding us, and the smell of popcorn and ice was truly awesome. But now that I am a “grown up” I haven’t been to Disney on Ice in a very long time and I would love to go and have that comforting feeling that everything is how it should be. I now have a child of my own and this is his first year, I would love to be able to take him and start this tradition that my grandparents started with my siblings and me, with him!
Congratulations, Danielle! We will email you the award details shortly.
Thanks again to everyone who submitted a memory. We had a great time reading them all!
We will be holding more contests as the we get closer to the 2010 Oklahoma State Fair so check back often for updates.
Friday Fare Feature – Five Alarm Salsa
The Friday Fare Feature is a weekly post on Fair Slice Blog showcasing one of the award-winning recipes from an Oklahoma State Fair cooking contest.
Are you a fan of homemade salsa? We are, so we introduced a brand new homemade salsa contest during the 2009 Oklahoma State Fair called Some Like it Hot. And, boy howdy, some of you like your salsa HOT! This delicious Five Alarm Salsa was submitted by Martha Buehring from Norman and is guaranteed to knock your socks off!
WARNING: This recipe contains FOUR Habenero peppers. These peppers are not for the faint of heart, and they are near the top of the Scoville Scale with a score of about 200,000. That means that these peppers need to be diluted 200,000 times before the capsaicin (the heat) is undetectable. That’s one hot pepper! Or, in this case, that’s FOUR hot peppers!
Five Alarm Salsa
3 Jalapeno peppers, chopped
4 Habanero peppers, chopped
3 tomatillos, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
4 plum tomatoes, chopped
2 cloves of Garlic, chopped
½ cup of each, green, red, orange, yellow bell pepper, chopped
½ cup Serrano pepper, chopped
3 sprigs fresh cilantro, chopped
1 ½ Tbsp. ground cumin
2 Tbsp. Virgin Olive Oil
2 Tbsp. vinegar
1 Tbsp. fresh lime juice
½ tsp. salt
½ avocado, peeled and cut into chunks
Combine all ingredients, except the avocado, in medium bowl. Let stand for 20 to 30 minute at room temperature then place in refrigerator to chill. Before serving, peel, dice and add the avocado to the salsa.
Did you know that you can be a judge during the 2010 Some Like it Hot Salsa Contest? The public has an opportunity to taste all the salsas and vote on a favorite to win the People’s Choice Award. If you are interested in judging, mark your calendars for Thursday, September 16 at 6 pm. The contest will be held in the Creative Arts Building. Don’t worry – the fire department will be on call!

Friday Fare Feature – Quickie Blueberry Cobbler
The Friday Fare Feature is a weekly post on Fair Slice Blog showcasing one of the award-winning recipes from an Oklahoma State Fair cooking contest.
Looking for a simple dessert to try for Mother’s Day? It doesn’t get any simpler than this recipe from April Novak. Don’t be fooled by its ease – this recipe is as easy as it is delicious. Out of all the entries in the 2009 Scrumptious from Scratch: Pies, Cobblers, and Cheesecake Contest, it placed 1st!
Quickie Blueberry Cobbler
½ tsp. baking powder
¾ cup flour
2 TSP butter
1 egg
2 cups blueberries
(Not keen on blueberries? No problem! April says that this recipe is great, because any fruit filling can be used.)
Mix baking powder, flour, butter, and egg together and pour ½ into a greased baking dish. Top with blueberries. Pour the remaining batter over the blueberries. Bake at 350 degrees or until golden brown.
